My Story Into Triathlon

I was introduced to Triathlon in Jan 2009 through Robert, a friend from Church. Robert had just finished his first Ironman. I had never heard about the Ironman, but after learning about the 140.6 mile challenge, God immediately wrote it on my heart to compete in an Ironman. I didn't own a bike, I had never ran further than 10 miles, and hadn't a clue how to swim. To give you an idea of my swimming ability, I was always the kid who failed the swim test at camp. Nine months later from my learning what the Ironman was, I competed and placed 2nd in Ironman Arizona. I tell you this not to boast in my own ability (clearly, I had very limited experience) but to testify that my performance was truly a miracle from above. There is no other way to explain the results. The Lord blessed me during the months leading up to triathlon by providing resources, surrounding me with positive role models, and giving me a great support system.

There is so much I love about triathlon. I love the discipline of waking up for 5am workouts, the feeling of exhaustion after riding 100 miles in the Texas heat, and the commodore that develops between fellow athletes. Most of all, I enjoy setting elaborate goals, formulating a plan to achieve those goals, and than focusing and committing to make the plan work! These same disciplines of triathlon have poured over into my work, social and spiritual life. God has blessed me through triathlon in showing me how you reap what you sow, the beauty of perseverance, and how to lean on His strength instead of my own.
